Manual
This manual explains the screen items and plotting features of ClimCanvas chapter by chapter. See Install for installation, Usage for operational procedures such as launching the app and saving sessions, and the FAQ when something goes wrong.
Chapters
- Basic operation — launch and quit, screen and sidebar layout, loading files, figure size and aspect ratio, figure-wide format, text and markers, saving, performance guide.
- Data handling — auto-detection and manual override of coordinate roles, 2-D coordinate grids, fixing dimensions and range means, cropping ranges, cyclic longitude, missing values, time axis and calendars.
- Computational conventions — selection of coordinate values (exact match), padding when cropping a region, weights of range means, missing values, value transforms and mask-out, definitions of statistics (standard deviation, whiskers, KDE, bins), longitude conventions, vectors on 2-D coordinate grids, calendars, dimension alignment, plotting assumptions. A list of the conventions needed to verify a figure.
- Plot modes — what the 7 modes do and when they appear, map projection, region, coastlines and gridlines, section orientation and terrain mask, plot variables for 1-D, scatter and aggregation plots.
- Layers: maps and sections — fill, contours, hatch, vectors, streamlines, scatter (points), track, colormaps and colorbars, value transforms and mask-out, stacking order.
- Layers: 1-D, scatter and aggregation — line, line bundle, line fill, stack plot, bar chart, histogram, ECDF, box plot, violin, scatter, bubble chart, 2-D histogram, hexbin.
- Axes, legend and frame — settings shared by 1-D, scatter and aggregation plots: axes (log, inverted, range, time-axis format), axis labels, ticks, frame, background, filled spans and reference lines, legend.
- Multiple panels — panel layout, row and column ratios, merged cells (mosaic), panel labels, "All panels shared" editing, shared colorbar, relation to animation.
- Output and reproduction scripts — still-image formats and resolution, animations by time stepping and by rotating the globe, structure of the reproduction script, contents of sessions and presets.
- Interpolation of sections along a path — technical note. How values are produced for vertical cross-sections along a parallel, a meridian or a great circle (path points, fractional grid indices, bilinear interpolation), rules for missing values, accuracy, embedding in the reproduction script.
How to read
- Operations on the screen are written as a chain with "→", for example "Save" → "Session" → "To this PC".
- Default values of settings follow the defaults of matplotlib / cartopy. See the "Default" column of each table.
- The text corresponds to the version of ClimCanvas shown at the top of the page.
